PRODUCT DEVELOPER

The purpose of the YELLS startup was to create a safety wearable device for people to wear when traveling The design is aimed to provide people with a resource to protect themselves or get themselves out of uncomfortable situations.

Working as a researcher and product developer, my main responsibilities were as followed:

  • Designing, prototyping & researching emergency safety devices

  • Testing ideas using SPRINT and conducting FOCUS group interviews for product development

  • Developing feasible prototypes using Solidworks and AutoCAD

  • Creating the prototypes circuit and hardware features

This experience helped me gain experience in the industry and develop a product through my technical skills as an engineer. Developing engineering specifications, and candidate designs and working with Solidworks and 3D Printing were all related to my field and future career path. Communication and leadership were essential in this role in order to get my ideas through the team and ensure everyone was comprehending my design process.

GearBox

Mechanical Engineering Design Dissection

This project involved creating a physical assembly of a speed-reduction gearbox. Our group focused specifically on a parallel gearbox with the input and output shafts co-linear to the axis of rotation. My responsibilities included:

- Solidworks design of main housing and transmission shafts

- 3D printing individual parts using DigiFab

- Physical / Solidworks assembly of the gearbox

- Iterating through design ideas and prototyping

This project helped develop my problem-solving skills and generate different solutions to accomplish the task and meet the requirements of the project (speed reduction ratio of 12:1, co-linear gear shafts, and 3D printing restrictions). It also helped build my communication skills when collaborating on work with others; especially when parts of the CAD needed to be well-designed and interdependent. My skills and work as a team member can be supported by my ITP metric feedback below.

CNC Machine

Mechanical Engineering Design Project

The aim of this project was to develop an advanced conceptual design for a “desktop” pick-and-place machine, to be used in an educational setting. The team and I generated a complete CAD design/drawings along with an engineering report. My personal responsibilities included:

  • Solidworks CAD of mainframe, component feeder, and their respective mechanisms

  • Research of various motors, mechanisms, and CNC machines

  • Using McMaster Carr to aid the overall design and explore the different potential motors

This project helped strengthen my CAD, communication, and problem-solving skills simultaneously. I was required to collaborate on design parts with my team and ensure all the assemblies/parts were fitting with the machine. I helped guide my team and both teach and learn new skills from them. The problem at hand required in-depth research, brainstorming, and technical skills. My skills developed and work as a team member can be credited below from the ITP metrics.
